MS 165: 2014 Sustainable Tourism - Eco Label Certification
Sustainable development is one of the challenges that ranks high on the international agenda in this era of climate change. It is all about finding the right balance in the fulfilment of human needs while protecting the natural environment, so that these needs can be met not only in the present, but also in the indefinite future.
The Ministry of Tourism and Leisure has, in consultation with relevant stakeholders and the assistance of the Mauritius Standards Bureau, developed the standard MS165:2014 for sustainable tourism in Mauritius. The Mauritian Standard specifies the requirements that tourism operators should seek to achieve to obtain an eco-label. All requirements for this standard are generic and are intended to be applicable to tourism businesses regardless of their type, size or location. This standard can be used independently but it can be aligned or integrated with other management systems.
An Awareness Workshop on the MS165:2014 - Sustainable Tourism was held on 15 October 2014 at the Henessy Park Hotel at Ebene to sensitise operators on the benefits of adopting cleaner production technologies and eco-label standards. Moreover, to support the tourism businesses to obtain this certification, the Tourism Authority has, with the financial assistance of MID Commission, devised a scheme to provide a matching grant equivalent to 50% of the certification costs.
